Hello, Dolly! returns to the Massey Theatre
By Grace Escudero
Royal City Musical Theatre returns to the Massey Theatre stage this weekend with its much anticipated performance of Hello, Dolly!
The show features several North Shore performers, including Chris Adams, Daniel Bergeron, Lauren Gula and Angus Chiu.
Colleen Winton, who plays Dolly Levi, performed her first-ever show at the Massey, is ecstatic to return to the theatre.
“The Massey is a large and grand space, there are all types of events that go on there but few take advantage of what the theatre can offer. It’s a grand theatre and this is going to be a grand show,” said Winton.
The show will include a full orchestra, which according to Adams is a pretty big deal.
“Professionally, most theatres can’t afford an orchestra in Canada, so getting the opportunity to work with a full orchestra is a real honour,” said Adams.
The 15-piece orchestra is a hallmark of the musical theatre company, said James Bryson, the musical director.
“Our orchestra is composed of volunteers who play out of the goodness of their hearts, they are of all ages and some are my former students,” said Bryson, who used to teach music at high schools in Coquitlam.
According to Winton, the Royal City Musical Theatre is the perfect training ground for the performers, many of which are community players from surrounding areas.
“Royal City Musical Theatre has become a training ground that these young people take very seriously. It’s still a very fun and social environment full of enthusiasm and experience, but everyone behaves very professionally,” said Winton.
The show will run from April 12 to 28 at the Massey Theatre at 735 Eighth Ave. in New West. Tickets can be purchased online at masseytheatre.com or by phone at 604-521-5050. For further information, go to royalcitymusicaltheatre.com.
