One person is dead following an early morning blaze in West Vancouver.

West Vancouver police and fire rescue are investigating the cause of a deadly fire that broke out before 2 a.m. Tuesday is a suite on the eighth floor of a ten-storey apartment tower called 'The Mermaid' at 1485 Duchess Avenue.

WVPD were called to the scene by the fire department at around 2:15 a.m. after the flames were put out by fire personnel.

The fire was contained to only a portion of the suite, but there investigators found the body of a deceased occupant.

Fire and police remained on-scene Tuesday and the BC Coroner's Service has been advised of the death, according to WVPD spokesman Cpl. Jag Johal.

West Vancouver police said Tuesday the fire is not considered suspicious at this time but the cause is still under investigation.

There was no visible fire damage to the outside of the building Tuesday morning and all residents had been allowed back into their suites once the fire department had cleared the building of smoke.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call West Vancouver police at 604-925-7300.
