Drunk driver caught on soccer field

North Vancouver RCMP have arrested a local man after an all-too-literal attempt at driving to the goal on a Grand Boulevard soccer pitch.

At about 12:30 a.m. Friday morning a North Van officer out on patrol noticed a vehicle doing doughnuts on the soccer field at Grand Boulevard East and 15th Street. The officer stopped the vehicle as it drove off the field.

The driver, a 22-year-old man from North Vancouver, has been charged with impaired driving. His licence has been suspended for 90 days, his vehicle impounded for 30 days.

"The driver was also charged with mischief to property, a criminal offence," said Cpl. Richard De Jong, spokesperson for the North Vancouver RCMP in a press release.

"These soccer fields are used extensively by the general public, and now they will be out of commission until further notice. This is clearly an indicator of how alcohol impacts thought, mood and judgment and the negative consequences that follow."
