UPDATE: Hiker killed in North Vancouver mountain fall identified
The BC Coroners Service has identified the hiker killed in a fall in the North Vancouver backcountry Wednesday as 22-year-old German exchange student Jasper Houben.
Houben had been reported missing on June 25 and a massive search operation involving Houben's friends and even some family who flew in from Germany was launched.
At around 3 p.m. Wednesday, fellow hikers discovered Houben's body near the Dreamweaver Trail, below the trail's sixth switchbback, according to the North Vancouver RCMP.
His body was found near Mosquito Creek about an hour's hike northwest from Skyline Drive.
Mounties removed Houben's body using a helicopter and sling Wednesday evening with the help of North Shore Rescue volunteers.
"There is no indication of foul play. Rather this seems to be a tragic, accidental death," said North Vancouver RCMP spokesman Sgt. Peter Devries in a press release Wednesday evening.
The BC Coroners Service and the RCMP continue to investigate what led to Houben's death.
