A man is in hospital in serious condition and the B.C. Independent Investigations Office is investigating after an incident involving a police dog in North Vancouver Thursday.

At approximately 2 p.m., North Van RCMP officers responded to a fraud in progress at a Lonsdale Avenue financial institution. When officers arrived, a man was seen fleeing the area on foot. Officers followed but eventually lost the suspect.

The Mounties' Integrated Police Dog Service was called in and successfully tracked and located the man a short distance from the suspected crime scene.

During the arrest, the man was seriously injured by the dog, according to a press release from the Lower Mainland RCMP.

The 41-year-old man was taken to hospital where he remains in serious condition.

The IIO continues to investigate.
