Bear caught breaking into West Van backyard to feast for hibernation
This bear didn't need to read signs indicating his destination was on Orchard Place. He found the backyard apple trees on his own.
A West Vancouver family was visited by a hungry adult bear that stopped by their backyard on the 2300-block of Orchard Place. West Van police caught the bear on video reaching up into a tree to pluck dozens of apples to eat.
Conservation officers were contacted but they were dealing with a more aggressive bear in another Lower Mainland community. Police officers, however, were available to ensure nearby residents were safe until the bear left on its own.
They warn human-bear conflicts could increase because bears are currently going through hyperphagia — the time of year when they need to eat large amounts of food in preparation for hibernation.
On recommendation from the WVPD, the family has removed all the fruit trees from their backyard and is considering landscaping changes to ensure no bear attractants remain in the area.
