Police catch taxi driver speeding 160 km/hour in West Van
West Vancouver police say a taxi driver nearly topped the maximum speed of his hybrid car before being pulled over yesterday night.
The Toyota Prius was stopped for speeding 74 kilometres over the limit shortly before midnight yesterday on Highway 1 near Cypress Bowl Road. The taxi driver, a 33-year-old Surrey resident, was travelling 164 km/hour in a 90 km/hour zone.
Police spotted the man while conducting traffic enforcement along the highway. He didn't have passengers in the cab at the time.
He was given a $368 violation ticket for excessive speeding and the car was impounded for seven days.
The registered owner of the taxi is not being identified by the WVPD until the case is finished in traffic court.
On the same night, a Nissan sports coupe was pulled over for going 150 km/h on Highway 1. The driver was also given an excessive speeding ticket.
